Paoli, PA – March 15, 2006 - People are expected to outlive their driving ability by 10 years. The DriveWell program, developed by the American Society on Aging and funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration provided training to new local leaders at the society’s annual conference in Anaheim, CA this past week. Patricia Curry, founder and president of Wellhaven, LLC, became a local leader for the DriveWell program. “Driving is key to a senior’s independence,” said Curry, “and driving safely is important to the entire community. The DriveWell program is not about taking a senior’s keys, but helping older adults learn how to drive safely and recognize the time to begin modifying their driving behavior and patterns.” To remain independent during the time after people stop driving, older drivers should learn what community services are available in their neighborhoods. While there may not be many services provided by the government, there are often non-profit and faith-based services available. ###
