Wellhaven Gifts for Seniors commemorates VE Day with a special selection of gifts for WWII veterans, including a “senior edition” of Rosie the Riveter.

Paoli, PA - April 7, 2005 - Mother's Day is extra special this year for the women who participated in WWII, either on the home front or by serving with the military. May 8, 2005 is the 60th anniversary of VE Day, Victory in Europe, during World War II. Wellhaven Gifts for Seniors commemorates VE Day with a special selection of gifts for WWII veterans, including a "senior edition" of Rosie the Riveter proclaiming that "We Can Still Do It!"

Rosie the Riveter became a popular icon on wartime posters recruiting women to work in factories. Men fighting a war on two fronts created a shortage of available manufacturing labor at home. Rosie the Riveter became a popular icon on wartime posters recruiting women to work in factories. Men fighting a war on two fronts created a shortage of available manufacturing labor at home. Women were asked to step into these non-traditional jobs as part of their
patriotic duty.

By 1945 there were over 18.5 million women in the U.S. civilian workforce. Approximately 37% of the American female population, both single and married, had jobs by the end of the war. The U.S. government estimates that 66% of women who previously worked as waitresses acquired higher paying jobs on the factory floor. They helped assemble aircraft, ships and other supplies for the war effort. They were expected return to their housewife duties or other "women’s work" jobs such as waitresses when the war was over.

The Rosie the Riveter figurine with the "We can still do it!" saying is one of the most inspiring items in Wellhaven's collection of gifts for WWII veterans. A woman who was in her 20s during the war could be an active 80-something today. She may appreciate this unique Mother's Day gift that recognizes her accomplishments and promotes a positive attitude about aging.

"May is also Older Americans Month, so it is important that we recognize the valuable contributions of the women of WWII in creating professional opportunities for women today," commented Patricia Curry, founder and CEO of Wellhaven Gifts for Seniors. The Rosies and the pink-collar office workers of WWII were groundbreakers, employed in professions that under other circumstances may not have been available to them.

Wellhaven Gifts for Seniors is a small, female-owned business headquartered in Paoli, PA. The company's primary customers are the adult children and grandchildren who seek unique and useful gifts for their older relatives and friends.
