07/30/03 - Seniors Benefit from Therapeutic Gardening in Baltimore County, MD

Seniors Use Wellhaven Garden Gadgets in Therapeutic Gardening Program

Towson, MD - July 30, 2003 - While many Senior Citizens enjoy gardening in their retirement years, some experience difficulty with the work a garden requires. The Therapeutic Gardening Program offered through the Therapeutic Recreation Services Department of Baltimore County, Maryland enables people with disabilities to enjoy the benefits and satisfaction of gardening. The horticultural therapy program is conducted with Therapeutic Alternatives of Maryland (TALMAR) and has participants ranging in age from seven to 72.

Seniors benefit from the Baltimore County/TALMAR program in many ways.

  1. Socially - They interact with multiple generations of people in the program. Gardening is a shared interest that makes it easy to meet new friends.
  2. Intellectually - Seniors exercise their memory skills in the program by learning gardening techniques, logging plant progress and developing a plan for the following season.
  3. Physically - The Therapeutic Gardening Program employs horticultural and recreational therapists. They create accessible garden designs and provide adaptive tools to enable gardening activities.
The group recently purchased a number of items from Wellhaven's Garden Gadget line. Karen Volz, Coordinator of Therapeutic Recreation Services, remarked that the Ergonomic Trowel from Wellhaven is a favorite tool among program participants. "There are other adaptive gardening tools available that have a band around the arm. But the angle of the Ergonomic Trowel allows users to leverage their full arm strength and mobility."

Horticultural therapy provides a holistic approach to physical rehabilitation using plants and social activities. Programs are offered across the U.S. at various botanical gardens, physical rehabilitation centers and through community programs such as in Baltimore County. For more information visit the American Horticultural Therapy Association's web site, Baltimore County's web site, or TALMAR's web site.
