Frazer, PA - May 10, 2007 - The CarFit program was designed by the American Society on Aging and is promoted by AAA and AARP. As a member of the aging society, Wellhaven founder, Patricia Curry, became involved with CarFit through the complementary DriveWell program. "One of the ways we can be involved in the community is through the CarFit program," remarked Curry. "Safe driving among older adults is something that benefits all of us who drive or ride in a vehicle." As a local coordinator for the CarFit and DriveWell programs, Curry works with others involved in older driver education to provide community events. The CarFit program involves the senior citizen driver and his/her car. Volunteers complete a check list with the driver in the car. Items such as the correct positioning of mirrors and seats, use of the seat belt and routine items such as working turn signals and brake lights are covered in the interactive review. These events usually take place during warm weather months in a local parking lot. Curry was a participant in the CarFit pilot program in the Phialdelphia area in 2005. "There was strong interest from the seniors. With the cars lined up in the parking lot, it looked like a parade was about to start. The seniors seemed to enjoy the casual atmosphere in the park where we chose to do our event. Most importantly, they liked the idea of the review of their specific vehicle and the fact that this program was not designed to take away their car keys." For more information about the CarFit program, see a video of a recent event at the AARP web site at: http://www.aarp.org/bulletin/interactive/keep_on_drivin.html.
